Henry Lawson’s Wonderful Short Stories

Plus some poetic masterpieces // as read by the bush balladeer

A reading and discussion of some of Henry Lawsons most loved stories.

Rogues and larrikins feature in these timeless stories and showcase Henry Lawson’s range as a fiction writer and highlights his profound influence on how Australians see themselves.

His stories are all alive with the magic of Lawson’s genius.

  • In this story the woman remembers the many hardships and a few good times as she sits up all night with only a dog to help protect her and her children from a deadly snake.

  • The humorous story of three mates and their friendly dog, Tommy, who retrieves a loaded cartridge thrown by one of the three men .

Tommy thinks it is a game of ‘fetch’ and enjoys the tantalising fear of the men who expect the cartridge to explode any moment.

    One of Lawson’s best!

Many thanks for your wonderful contribution to the ceilidh on Friday evening. We very much appreciated your willingness to share the great gift you have. The poem you selected was perfect: the story was dramatic and challenging and its conclusion was incredibly moving.

Lawson was indeed something of a genius, and his poetry gathers force when recited to an appreciative audience.

I look forward to seeing you again at future Melbourne Scots events.
